INTERFACE
ROLLOVER ICONS:
As you investigate the murders, the cursor will change to indicate that
different actions can be performed. The change in cursor (rollover
icon) will be as follows:
The SKINNY arrow appears when your cursor is over an inactive area of
the screen. As you roll over an active area the skinny arrow turns into
a TWO TONED ARROW indicating that an object can be manipulated
(pages turned, drawers opened, doors unlocked, etc.) by clicking on it.
As you move the cursor to the bottom of the screen, the GO BACK ARROW
appears (pointing straight at you/down). If you click with this arrow
you will zoom back one level of perspective, allowing you to examine an
object or objects at a greater distance.
As you move the cursor to the top of the screen, the GO WAY BACK
ARROWS appear (the GO WAY BACK ARROWS are three smaller versions
of the GO BACK ARROW). If you click with these arrows visible,
you will zoom back to the widest possible view of any given room.
In panoramic spaces (when the entire space is too big to fit on the
screen), if you roll the cursor over to the left or right edges of the
screen, the LEFT ARROW or RIGHT ARROW appears and will cause the
screen to rotate left or right.
As you roll the cursor the left and right sides of the screen in
NON-panoramic images, the cursor will sometimes change to the LEFT
ARROW or RIGHT ARROW. If you click with either of these arrows you
can move laterally between nearby "close-up" images.
The BUBBLING BEAKER icon indicates that the item you have rolled over
can be sent to L.A.P.D. CRIME LAB for testing. Clicking the RIGHT mouse
button when the BUBBLING BEAKER is visible sends the item to the lab
(you will hear a bubbling sound).
UPPER RIGHT CORNER ICONS:
There are three icons in a menu that is activated by moving the cursor
to the upper right corner of the screen.
The MAP ICON takes you to a map of the city. The map is used for
navigating Los Angeles and thereby investigating crimes. Locations
such as crime scenes, offices/homes of suspects, etc. can either be
flashing or lit. Spaces that are flashing are either new or contain
information that must be attended to. Spaces that are lit have already
been investigated, but are still available for further snooping.
The PDA ICON activates your Personal Digital Assistant, a hand-held
computer containing all the files, communication devices, research, and
documentation for your case. The PDA contains all sorts of goodies
including autopsies, lab reports, digital video transmissions, lists of
phone numbers, a cell phone, police records, etc.
The DISK ICON takes you to disk and game functions. Here you can save
your investigation, quit your investigation, change your volume levels,
video size, etc.
The MOTIVE AND ALIBI button takes you directly to the Motive and Alibi
page in the PDA. You will need to establish a Motive for any suspect
you want to put surveillance on. Alibis are necessary to trim down
the suspect list and trigger the sting at Pandora's at the end of the game.
IF YOU ARE HAVING PROBLEMS:
VIDEO PROBLEMS:
If you have problems playing video at full screen (slow frame rate,
sound out of sync, "tearing," etc.), try switching to quarter screen
mode: Click the disk icon at the top right of the game screen, then
click "video/sound" and "quarter screen" to play back in quarter
screen video, which should make the video run more smoothly.
If you still have problems playing video at quarter screen size, make
sure that you have the latest version of your video card drivers
installed (you can download new drivers from the Web or an online
service from your computer or video card manufacturer's site).
This is especially important for users of the ATI Mach64 chipset on
Windows 3.x. Make sure you have at least version 3.03!
SPEED PROBLEMS:
If you find that the game panoramas or game map runs too slowly, make
sure that you have chosen the "Typical Install" which will install more
of the art assets on your computer's hard drive (you will have to
uninstall the game and install it again with a "typical install").
If you are using Windows 95 and the game is still running too slowly,
you should change your Color Palette to "256 Color" mode. This will
especially speed up game performance on computers with less than 16
megs of RAM and
